It was October 26, 1967, during the height of the Vietnam War, when an anti-aircraft missile hit McCain’s aircraft during a mission over Hanoi. 

Injured and parachuting into Trúc Bạch Lake, McCain was captured by the citizens and military of Hanoi. 

This moment he marked the beginning of his five-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in Hilton Hanoi, enduring unimaginable hardships and demonstrating unwavering resilience.

Controversy and Correction: The Monument’s Evolution

While the monument was not originally built to honor McCain, it has become a place where visitors worldwide come to pay their respects. 

In 2015, at McCain’s request, the monument underwent cleaning, and its inscription was revised to correct his name, remove a derogatory term, and accurately identify his service branch.
