West Lake

Welcome to West Lake, the majestic horseshoe-shaped marvel of Hanoi, currently chilling in the Tay Ho district like a boss.

This lake is like the James Bond of natural lakes, with aliases such as Dam Cao Cao, Kim Nguu Lake, Lang Bac, Dam Dam, and Doai Ho.

Clocking in at over 500 hectares and boasting a circumference of about 14.8 km, it’s the lake version of “go big or go home.”

Royal Rendezvous: Palaces and Pagodas by the Lakeside

West Lake isn’t just a pretty face; it’s been a celeb since the Ly and Tran dynasties.

Kings back in the day were all about lakeside real estate, building palaces like it was going out of style.

Thuy Hoa Palace, Ham Nguyen Palace, and Tu Hoa Palace—now home to Tran Quoc Pagoda—are just a few of the lakeside cribs from back in the day.

Around the Lake Adventures: Pagodas, Villages, and a Dash of History

If you think the fun ends with the lake, think again. Nghi Tam village, home to poet Ba, will tickle your cultural taste buds.

And don’t miss Nhat Tan Village with its Tao Sach Pagoda, a famous peach blossom industry that makes even the peaches blush.

Tu Tong Village has a kumquat game that puts all other kumquats to shame, and Thuy Khue Village is a cultural buffet with Ba Danh Pagoda, Quan Thanh Temple, and Tran Quoc Pagoda.

Phu Tay Ho: Where Legends and Scenery Collide

Phu Tay Ho, where Princess Lieu Hanh gets her due respect, is not just a relic—it’s a scenic extravaganza. Visit for the history, and stay for the view.

Thanh Nien Street: Where History Takes a Stroll

Once known as Co Ngu Street, this history strip around West Lake was transformed into Thanh Nien Street, thanks to President Ho Chi Minh’s grand plans.

On sunny days, you’ll find Hanoians strolling and rowing boats like it’s an Olympic sport, all while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.

Chu Van An School: Where Brains and Beauty Collide

Nestled by the lake, Chu Van An School is where education meets a picturesque landscape. Because who says studying can’t come with a view?

Legends Unleashed: From Fox Corpses to Golden Buffaloes

West Lake didn’t just happen; it’s got legends to prove it.

From battles between mythical creatures to misty conditions earning it the name “Foggy Lake,” this place has seen it all.

And let’s not forget its golden buffalo saga and the savvy rebranding to “West Lake” in 1573 to dodge an emperor’s name—talk about a glow-up!
