Location and Access

Situated predominantly within three communes—Kim Son, Son Dong, and Co Dong—in Son Tay town, with a small section belonging to Yen Bai commune, Ba Vi district, Dong Mo Lake sits about 50 km west of Hanoi’s city center. 

Travelers can easily access Dong Mo via Thang Long Avenue to Hoa Lac intersection and Highway 32 to Son Tay intersection.

Terrain

Dong Mo’s terrain is a captivating blend of semi-mountainous regions transitioning from high mountains to plains, characterized by low “bowl-shaped” hills and a network of small rivers and streams. 

Its transformation from streams flowing from Ba Vi Mountain and Vien Nam Mountain to an irrigation lake in the 1960s reshaped the landscape, creating what we now know as Dong Mo Lake.

Climate

History and Archeology

Steeped in history, Dong Mo – Hoa Lac’s area traces its roots back to the Cam Khe base, which is linked to the Hai Ba Trung uprising. 

Folklore even suggests that Dong Mo is a relic of the epic battle between Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh, adding an enchanting layer to its historical narrative. 

Archeologically rich, areas around the lake have yielded Paleolithic and early metal artifacts from the Son Vi Culture, dating back at least 4–5,000 years.

Construction and Conservation

The construction of Dong Mo Lake from 1969 to 1974 marked a significant engineering feat, serving irrigation needs for about 12,000 hectares of cultivated land. 

Despite signs of deterioration over the years, efforts to protect Dong Mo’s biodiversity, including the critically endangered Hoan Kiem turtle, have been ongoing. 

Collaborative conservation programs aim to preserve Dong Mo’s rich ecosystem for generations.

Dong Mo Lake’s biodiversity is a treasure trove, hosting 21 islands and various flora and fauna, including 35 fish species. 

Conservation efforts have been instrumental in protecting native species and mitigating the impact of invasive species.
