Old City Gate Hanoi (O Quan Chuong)

Old City Gate Hanoi (O Quan Chuong), also known as Ô Quan Chưởng, O Dong Ha, O Thanh Ha, or O Cua Dong, is a proud testament to Hanoi’s ancient past. 

Built in the 10th year of Canh Hung (1749) and rebuilt in the 3rd year of Gia Long (1817), this old east gate has remained steadfast, preserving the same architectural style for centuries.

It is one of the 21 gates from the old Thang Long citadel.

A Gateway Through Time

Located on O Quan Chuong Street, at the beginning of Hang Chieu Street, O Quan Chuong was strategically positioned near the foot of Chuong Duong Bridge. 

In ancient times, it marked the road from the city to the river bank, serving as a crucial passageway in Dong Ha ward, Hau Tuc district (later changed to Dong Xuan), former Tho Xuong district. 

The road from the gate to the bank of the Red River spans eighty meters, once considered suburban land.

Architectural Marvel

O Quan Chuong is not just a gate; it is a meticulously designed structure that showcases the architectural prowess of its time. 

The gate features a pavilion that oversees and safeguards the shopping district within. 

Today, the gate still boasts its original three-door entrance, flanking the main door by two side doors. 

A gazebo sits atop the main door, while a stone stele placed by Governor Hoang Dieu in 1881, recording a ban on harassment by guards, adorns the wall to the left of the main entrance. 

Above the main door, three Chinese characters, 東河門 (Dong Ha Mon) proudly declare their names.

The French Connection

Legend has it that O Quan Chuong’s name originated from an event during the French colonial era. In the 26th year of Tu Duc, the French attacked Hanoi on November 20, 1873.

According to “People and Scenes of Hanoi” by Mr. Hoang Dao Thuy, a chancellor, and a hundred soldiers defended the city from the Quan Chuong gate during the attack.

While the French referred to it as Porte Jean-Dupuis, after a base established by Dupuis in the area, the events of 1873 remain unverified.
