Hang Dau Water Tank

With its rich history and vibrant culture, Hanoi is dotted with hidden gems that tell stories of its past.

One such gem is the Hang Dau Water Tower, a historical relic testament to the city’s resilience and innovation.

A French Colonial Legacy

Built in 1894 during the French colonial era, the Hang Dau Water Tower was a vital water supply point for the city.

At that time, Hanoi faced major epidemics due to contaminated water sources, prompting the French to establish a clean water supply system.

The tower and the Yen Phu water plant played a crucial role in Hanoi by providing clean water to the city center.

Architectural Marvel

Designed like a three-story fortress, the tower’s cylindrical body and cone-shaped roof are reminiscent of a bygone era.

The interior housed a steel water tank with a capacity of 1250 m³, supplied by the Yen Phu water plant.

Surrounding the tower is a stone wall with narrow doorways, giving it a fortress-like appearance.

Cultural Significance

Over the years, the Hang Dau Water Tower has become more than just a functional structure.

It has evolved into a cultural symbol, representing Hanoi’s history and resilience.

Despite demolition threats and neglect, efforts have been made to preserve its historical integrity.

Preservation Efforts

The Hanoi Clean Water Company has played a pivotal role in preserving the tower’s heritage.

Despite challenges, including rapid urbanization, proposals to classify the tower as a historical relic have gained traction.

Renovations in 2010 and lighting installations from 2015 to 2017 have further highlighted its significance.
